About Pubic Lice!
Each year in the United States, an estimated 12 million people contract Pubic Lice, three million of which are new cases. Predominantly found in the genital area, armpits, eyebrows, eyelashes, scalp and the lower abdomen. Pubic Lice are tiny, oval-shaped and generally grayish in color, although after feeding they take on a reddish-brown hue because they are full of blood. The nits (i.e. eggs) are also very small and are white in color. They are more commonly referred to as "crabs" because of their resemblance to the crab in their pincher-like claws.
Itching is the first symptom of Pubic Lice. Although it is possible to have an infestation of Pubic Lice without any symptoms, the individual will usually experience itching, especially at night when the Lice become more active to begin feeding. Scratching will only worsen the present irritation and can lead to serious secondary infection which may result in lesions, fever, genital discharge, or a burning sensation when you urinate.
Pubic Lice are generally transmitted through intimate or sexual contact and are most often found in the genital region of the body, which is why Pubic Lice are widely identified as an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease). If you are infected with Pubic Lice, you should be checked for other sexually transmitted diseases and alert any sexual partners who may also be infected because they may require treatment as well. But sexual contact is not the only way to contract Pubic Lice. They can also be transmitted by sharing bedding or clothing that is infested. A common misconception is that pubic lice can be contracted from a toilet seat. Although it is possible, it is extremely unlikely. The Life Cycle of Pubic Lice
There are three stages that complete the life cycle of Pubic Lice: nit, nymph and adult.
Nit: Nits are the eggs of the pubic louse. They are found firmly wrapped around the hair shaft of the affected area and hatch in approximately 6-8 days. The nits appear oval and are usually yellow to white in color. These nits are roughly 1 millimeter in length and can stay alive for up to 14 days once removed from a host.
Nymph: Upon hatching, the baby louse is considered a nymph. Nymphs range from 1.1 millimeters to 1.3 millimeters in length and mature about 7 days after hatching. In order to continue life, the nymph must feed on a blood meal from a human host.
Adult: Without a host, adults cannot live past 1-2 days. The adult pubic louse is tan to grayish-white in color and ranges from 1.25 millimeters to 2 millimeters in size. The female louse is generally larger in size than the male. The female may lay up to 40 nits at a time or 30-90 nits in their life span.
