The Morgellons Research Foundation (MRF) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, dedicated to conquering a newly emerging infectious disease, which we refer to as "Morgellons disease". It was established in 2002 by Mary Leitao in honor of her child, who developed symptoms of the disease.

The MRF works with physicians, nurses, patients and research scientists in order to better understand the disease and to increase public awareness. The primary goals of the Morgellons Research Foundation are to increase awareness and find a cure for Morgellons Disease. Where did the term "Morgellons" come from?

The term "Morgellons" was coined in 2002 by Mary Leitao while investigating her son's unexplained symptoms. The name Morgellon’s (with a hard “g”) is based on a piece of literature from the 17th-century in which several medical conditions with similar symptoms are referenced. While it is doubtful that the 17th-century disease has any direct relationship to the modern day Morgellons Disease, the similarities were such that Leitao elected to use the term in order to give a definitive name to a condition that many people suffer from without a conclusive diagnosis.
